Thailand braces for large anti-government rally

BANGKOK (AP) ? Thailand will deploy thousands of police officers and has invoked a special security law for an anti-government rally Saturday that is expected to be the largest since Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra took office in 2011 and that officials fear could turn violent.

Authorities expect tens of thousands of protesters, a turnout that would serve as a sharp reminder of the deep political divisions in the country despite two years of relative calm.

Yingluck on Friday accused the protesters of seeking to overthrow her elected government.

The demonstration is being organized by a royalist group calling itself "Pitak Siam" ? or "Protect Thailand" ? at Bangkok's Royal Plaza, a public space near Parliament that has been used by protesters in the past.

While the group is a newcomer to Thailand's protest scene, it is linked to the well-known "Yellow Shirt" protesters, whose rallies led to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's overthrow. The same movement later toppled a Thaksin-allied elected government after occupying and shutting down Bangkok's two airports for a week in 2008.

Thaksin, who is the brother of current prime minister Yingluck, remains a divisive figure in Thai politics. The Yellow Shirts and their allies say he is personally corrupt and accuse him of seeking to undermine the popular constitutional monarch ? a charge Thaksin denies.

Yingluck is taking Saturday's rally seriously. Her Cabinet invoked the Internal Security Act on Thursday in three Bangkok districts around the protest site, and she later addressed the nation to explain the move, citing concerns of violence.

In a nationally televised address, Yingluck said protest leaders "seek to overthrow an elected government and democratic rule ... and there is evidence that violence may be used to achieve those ends."

The security act allows authorities to close roads, impose curfews and ban use of electronic devices in designated areas. Measures began taking effect Thursday night, with police closing roads around Yingluck's office, the Government House, and placing extra security at the homes of senior officials, including the prime minister.

National police chief spokesman Maj. Gen. Piya Uthayo said Friday that nearly 17,000 police officers had been called in from around the country to provide security for the rally.

The new protest group's leader is retired army Gen. Boonlert Kaewprasit, who is best known for his role as president of the Thailand Boxing Association. His name is unfamiliar in the anti-Thaksin protest movement but his message appears to have resonated with Yellow Shirt supporters who have laid low in recent years after Yingluck's party won the last elections.

Analysts said they did not view the protest as an immediate threat to Yingluck's government but were watching it closely.

"Anytime you have tens of thousands of people converging, assembling in a central Bangkok location, it becomes a government stability concern," said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University.

But, he added: "I think it's a serious concern more than a serious threat."

Thailand has been gripped by bouts of political instability since 2006, with Thaksin's supporters and opponents taking turns to spar over who has the right to rule the country.

The most violent episode came in 2010, when Thaksin's "Red Shirt" supporters led a two-month occupation of central Bangkok to demand the resignation of an anti-Thaksin government. The protests sparked a military crackdown that left at least 91 people dead and more than 1,700 injured.

Thaksin has lived in self-imposed exile since 2008 when he jumped bail to evade a corruption conviction and two-year jail term. He retains huge popularity among the rural poor, who want to see him pardoned and returned to power. But he is reviled by the urban elite and educated middle class, who see him as authoritarian and a threat to the monarchy.

Buoyed by Thaksin's political machine, Yingluck was elected by a landslide victory in August 2011. She initially was criticized for her lack of political experience ? she was an executive in Shinawatra family businesses ? but has won praise for leading the country through one of its longest peaceful periods in recent years.

Hydrophonic - A Scientific Procedure

Hydroponics is the term used for plants. Plants can be grown using this technique under fully controlled environments without any need for the climatic situations. Vegetables, fruits and many more things can be grown using watering methods. This method was started in 1962 and proved to be very helpful as it does not need any knowledge as the plants grown in the soil needs. They can be grown with controlled nutrition levels in the water, watery plants are advantageous as the pests and diseases in them can themselves be ridden with the water which cannot be done in case of soily plants. They provide us with very solid and high quality yields.

Hydroponics plants can be grown with various hydroponic equipments. Solution culture and medium culture techniques are used in growing plants, irrigation procedure is the main thing needed to grow the plants. Various hydroponics equipment used are built of plastic, other equipments can be made of concrete, glass and wood is also used. Plants can also be grown in solutions using various types of containers, such as buckets, tubs, or tanks. A proper nutrient solution is made inside the containers. Water level is kept according to the root of the plans so that they can get sufficient oxygen inside the containers. Plants can also be grown in the glass jars, their size varies according to the plant, if the size of the plant is large the containers that are used should also be large.

Then their upper part is covered with the aluminium foil or anything else such that they do not die because of the outside environment which is not suitable for them. Aquarium pumps are used to give them sufficient oxygen. Many plants are also grown in flowing water. They are dipped in water and water recycles itself. That water is again used for growing other plants. The advantage of this procedure is that it the water can be reused and the most interesting point is that impure water is used for the growth of plants, plants do not grow in distilled water. There are large tanks which can support large number of plants easily.

The water dissolved in the tanks is with the sufficient nutrients and is recycled after giving nutrition to the plants. Before growing plants in water there is a little conflict regarding the water supply, though it is not the major problem as is found in soils but still the issue is easily rectified by the agriculturalists which results in the healthy growth of plants with a very high quality breed. So in this way there are many more productive techniques in hydroponics method.

About the Author:
Hydroponics is a procedure that facilitates the growth of plants in water and not in soil with the help of the essential mineral nutrient solutions is called hydroponics.

International Ombudsman Institute: 10th World Conference ? new by ...

20 November 2012? The IOI held a very successful World Conference in Wellington, New Zealand from 12 to 16 November 2012.

As a forum for Ombudsman Institutions, the IOI World Conference once again enabled colleagues from around the world to meet and to share their experience and expertise; an opportunity particularly important in times of change and political, social, economic and technological challenges.

The 10th IOI World Conference paved the way for further strengthening the IOI as the leading organization within the international Ombudsman community. In its attempt to become more inclusive and to achieve greater openness towards Ombudsman institutions and their equivalent around the world, the IOI initiated a reform process and reviewed and revised its existing by-laws with the aim of establishing revised membership criteria and declare what the Institute stands for, i.e. include an International Ombudsman Standard in its by-laws.

In a transparent process involving the whole membership and carefully considering suggested amendments and ideas put forward, the IOI Board of Directors put forward a draft document of new by-laws to the General Assembly on 13 November 2012 for vote. These new by-laws were approved by the General Assembly with the overwhelming majority of 96,3% in favor.

The IOI Board of Directors is convinced that this new set of by-laws will govern the IOI's operations in a changed and changing world and would like to - once again - express its gratefulness for the support and assistance from the whole membership during this very important reform process.

Making the government accountable

Keeping governments transparent and accountable was the main message of a series of meetings held last week in Wellington, New Zealand.

More than 250 - Ombudsmen and Ombudswomen, deputies and complaint-handling investigators from around the world attended the 10th International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) Conference under the theme: Speaking Truth to Power - The Ombudsman in the 21st Century.

Tonga was represented by the Acting Commissioner for Public Relations, Mr Sateki ?Ahio, and Senior Investigator Pilimisolo Tamo'ua. The Acting Commissioner has a similar investigative role to an ombudsman; taking complaints from members of the public about the actions of government and officials.

Tonga also participated in the annual members' meeting of the Pacific Ombudsman Alliance (POA). The intent of POA is to provide a service delivery and mutual support organisation for Ombudsman and allied institutions of countries that are members of the Pacific Islands Forum.

The POA supports activities that assist its members to improve public administration in their countries. The members approved several new activities at the meeting, including a proposal for the Acting Commissioner and members of his staff to spend time in 2013 working with, and learning from, the Office of the New Zealand Ombudsman.

The meeting also offered pre-conference workshops on "Sharpening Your Teeth" - principles of effective investigations -? and "Managing Unreasonable Complainant Conduct" - identifying and managing difficult people.

Mr ?Ahio said: "I found the week of meetings and discussion very useful for me to learn how to be most effective in my new role. It has also shown that the proposed legislative amendments, to create an Ombudsman in Tonga, will be an important step in improving public administration and government accountability." Mr ?Ahio also thanked POA for funding his attendance at these meetings, and it's commitment for continuing assistance.

The Rt Hon Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1999-2008, was the first of a number of high profile and distinguished speakers who were present to offer their support for the Ombudsman offices - seeing it as a vital way forward in combating corruption and calling government administrations to account.

The work of the Ombudsman as an integrity and accountability oversight body is very important and vital to every government.

"Lack of integrity and accountability can be corrosive to the governance and resources of the whole country," The Rt Hon. Clark warned.

"Building inclusive and responsive government is essential for human development, empowerment and justice with dignity," said Clark, who is now the Administrator of the UN Development Program.

The IOI conference also coincide the 50th anniversary of the NZ Ombudsman, the first English-speaking nation to adopt the concept outside the Scandinavian countries.

Former NZ Ombudsman and former Governor-General of New Zealand Anand Satyanand was also a speaker and so as former NZ Ombudsman Sir Brian Elwood, former NZ Prime Minister Sir Geoffrey Palmer.

RolePlayGateway?

About Me: Hello, I go by the name of Toxica and I've been around here for a while I believe its a year or two? Anyways, I'm a bit different from a lot of fellow roleplayers here, or at least I like to believe I am, the reason I say that is that I tend to lean more towards the dark side of story telling. I have a twisted mind (I'm a fairly innocent person though) so my roleplays/stories tend to be a bit dark and I love when something horrid or crazy happens. I do joke around a lot and about 60% of the things I say is sarcasm, 20% are jokes, 10% is just crap that spills out my mouth that hold no meaning or I've given literally no thought on whatsoever, and the last 10% is a sincere conversation.

About the Story: The story takes place in the 18th century in a town called Wickersville. Normal life within the town changed once word of a the Black Plague outbreak caused the town to be placed into a quarantine. Whether planned or out of coincidence a serial killer decided this was the perfect time to unleash his/her killing spree resulting in the town to be condemned to death by the hands of each other, the plague, or the serial killer. With the situation worsening as the citizens themselves begin to turn on each other, a small group of heroic individuals attempt to find the culprit of the these murders. But this goal won't be so easy due to the fact that they must keep order, survive the wild witch hunts for the serial killer, find a way to tear down the quarantine, and keep from obtaining the plague. How much can weight can these people be burdened with before they snap? That is whatw e're here to find out.

About the Story: As you probably guessed, this is a story that falls into the genre mystery and horror due to this I label this roleplay as mature. This will have a controlled sandbox environment allowing your character to do as they please, go where they please, and say as they please just keep in mind this is a realistic roleplay and there are consequences for your actions. This roleplay will be extremely interactive, you will be able to interact will any and all NPCs most, if not all, having their own characteristic and information. Also, keep in mind investigation is crucial especially since one of these citizens is the killer.

About the Roles: The roles that need filling are the 'Amateur Detectives'. These detectives are citizens of the town that have taken in interest in catching the culprit with the police support to an extent. Your characters can be a son, daughter, father, friend, girlfriend, etc. of anyone. The important thing is their actions form the start of the story to the end of it. Seeking Two More Roleplayers.

Story Progression: The roleplay have not commenced yet but so far there are two individuals that are interested and reserved two spots within the roleplay. All is needed is at least two more.

Thank you for allowing me to have a moment of your time, if interested place follow this link to the roleplay tab:

Celebrating Thanksgiving with Turkey Hunting Patents | IPWatchdog ...

On this most festive of American holidays, where we emerse ourselves with family, food and football, I am once again inspired to share some thematically appropriate patents. After all, what better way to celebrate a holiday than reading patents appropriate for the festivities?

Before proceeding immediately into the discussion of various turkey related U.S. patents, allow me to first present my yearly Thanksgiving public service announcement. ?This announcement is not about the perils of eating too much turkey and falling asleep before dessert, or before you have gotten your appropriate fill of the NFL. ?Rather, this public service announcement is for the mathematically, or at least geometrically, challenged in the audience.

If you are going to deep fry your turkey you MUST remember 2 things (at least). ?First, make sure the turkey is completely thawed! You do not want to put something frozen into a pot of boiling oil! ?Second, for goodness sakes don?t fill the turkey fryer to the top with oil and then put in the turkey! ?Let Archimedes be your guide.

If you fill the fryer to the top with boiling oil and then drop your turkey into the fryer you will be in for quite a surprise; one that may actually burn your house down or at least destroy your deck. You see, the oil that will overflow the cooking vessel will be equal in volume to that of the turkey you just dropped into the cooking vessel! That means boiling oil everywhere, likely on you, and definitely scatter copiously around soon to be ignited by the bunsen-burner-like flame that you used to heat the oil in the first place.

One more ? all new???public service announcement related to Thanksgiving, but worth applying in your day to day life no doubt. ?Whatever you do don?t drink too much before you start to carve the turkey, ham or roast beast of whatever variety. ?Trust me, nothing good will come of it! Although one of my fondest Thanksgiving memories was that Thanksgiving so many years ago?? maybe 25 years ago now or more ? when my father had bandages on nearly every one of his fingers, even his thumbs. I can?t ever remember laughing that hard as my uncle and I kept giving him more and more jazz as he carved up finger after finger in what would become a futile attempt to carve the holiday turkey.

On that note, and without any further ado, here a couple holiday appropriate patents that relate to hunting turkeys for your reading pleasure and thoughtful consideration. ?Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Enjoy your time with family and friends!

?

Turkey decoy
U.S. Patent No.?8,191,304
Issued June 5, 2012

There are numerous turkey decoys to choose from, but this one was actually issued since last Thanksgiving, making it one of the most recently issued turkey patents granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. That being the case I just couldn?t pass is up.

This invention relates to an animal decoy specifically for use in hunting, and is designed to be stored and conveyed in a collapsible configuration. More specifically the invention relates to the hunting of the wild turkeys. ?The decoy device presents an artificial representation of a male turkey in a mating display termed ?strutting.? ?Strutting attracts other male turkeys. ?The decoy device, therefore, creates the illusion of a male turkey displaying mating actions, strutting, or attempting to attract females, which in turn draws the attention and prospective interaction of other male turkeys. ?The patent is quick to explain that the attracting of turkeys is ?for the purpose of legal harvesting or photographing.?

?

Collapsible hunting blind
U.S. Patent No. 7,828,003
Issued November 9, 2010

This invention is a?combination decoy and hunting blind that provides a portable and lightweight configuration. According to the patent the use of the invention is to attract game animals, such as turkeys, while also concealing a hunter from those game animals that will be attracted. More specifically, a turkey decoy and hunting blind is provided by this portable structure that approximates an extremely large umbrella frame that is laid on the grown.

It is a bit difficult to take this invention too seriously for several reasons. ?First, according to?Oregon State University poultry scientist Tom Savage, turkeys are ?smart animals with personality and character, and keen awareness of their surroundings.? ?That being the case, exactly which turkeys are likely to be attracted by a 6 foot turkey plastered onto a giant umbrella laid on its side, as pictured in the main drawing in the patent? Furthermore, Figure 13 (see below) is exactly an umbrella with a turkey decoration, yet the patent describes Figure 13 as a ?fully deployed configuration of a blind as as to illustrate turkey decoy image.? ?Really? A hunting blind? ?This is an old fashion umbrella.

The invention might make a nice gag gift, but I just don?t see this fooling anyone other than the hunter.

Caffeine-diabetes link still unresolved: study

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Results of a large new U.S. study confirm that sugary drinks are linked to a heightened risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, but shed little light on whether caffeine helps or hinders the process.

Among more than 100,000 men and women followed for 22 years, those who drank sugar-sweetened drinks were as much as 23 percent more likely to develop diabetes than those who didn't, but the risk was about the same whether the drinks contained caffeine or not. And drinkers of both caffeinated coffee and decaf had slightly lowered diabetes risk.

"We found that caffeine doesn't make a difference at all," said the study's lead author Dr. Frank Hu of Harvard University. "Coffee can be beneficial and the caffeine doesn't appear to have a positive or negative effect on diabetes risk," Hu told Reuters Health.

Numerous past studies have linked regular consumption of soft drinks - both sugar- and artificially-sweetened - to an increased risk of diabetes. Research over the past decade has also suggested that caffeine temporarily prevents the body from processing sugar efficiently. Those who live with diabetes deal with this problem all the time.

That at least suggests that caffeine in conjunction with sweetened drinks might raise diabetes risk even further. However, other research has found a protective effect from coffee and tea, suggesting caffeine does the opposite.

Hu and his coauthors wanted to know if people who regularly drink sugary and caffeinated beverages might only be exaggerating their risk of developing a disease that affects nearly 26 million adults and children, or about eight percent of the U.S. population, according to the American Diabetes Association.

They examined the health habits of 75,000 women and 39,000 men involved in long-term health studies that began in the mid-1980s.

Compared to people who didn't consume sugary drinks, the likelihood of developing diabetes over the years for those who did was higher by 13 percent (caffeinated) or 11 percent (decaffeinated) among women, and by 16 percent (caffeinated) or 23 percent (decaffeinated) among men.

Caffeine-free artificially sweetened drinks were also linked to a slight (six percent) increase in risk among women.

However, coffee drinkers showed slightly lower risk compared to non-drinkers. The chances of developing diabetes were eight percent lower among women, whether they drank decaf or regular coffee, and for men, four percent lower with caffeinated coffee and seven percent lower with decaf.

Hu and his team have used this same dataset, which contains the health habits of mostly white health professionals, to suggest that regular coffee drinking in general is tied to lower diabetes risk.

But past studies, like the current one, have also found that the risk falls even lower if adults drink decaffeinated coffee.

"Our understanding of the body's tolerance to caffeine is not complete," said James Lane of Duke University. Lane has done short-term studies that linked caffeine to a disruption of the body's ability to process glucose, or "blood sugar."

This latest study suggests that people who currently drink sugary beverages could substitute unsweetened coffee or tea - though tea was associated with fewer benefits - instead.

Such advice could be important, since the number of Americans who develop diabetes has steadily increased, according to a study released earlier this month by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Diabetes can only be managed, not cured and its side effects range from high blood pressure to debilitating blindness.

"I'm disappointed that they are essentially repeating something they published several years ago. The bit about including sugar sweetened beverages and caffeine's possible interaction with sugar and diabetes does not add something of great value," Lane told Reuters Health.

Others agree more research is necessary to untangle caffeinated coffee's complicated relationship with diabetes risk.

At least one small, randomized two-month-long trial led last year by Rob Martinus van Dam of the National University of Singapore, also a co-author of the current study, found that caffeinated coffee did not seem to affect glucose levels in the blood.

Van Dam told Reuters Health that the next step toward establishing a direct link between caffeinated coffee and reduced diabetes risk would require a much larger study.

"We still don't advise people to start drinking coffee if they do not already," van Dam said.

People who want to lower their risk of developing diabetes could follow advice that has been better substantiated, such as eating large amounts of fruits and vegetables and exercising regularly.

Play Store now pushing potential Nexus 4 buyers to T-Mobile

Play Store Nexus 4 Listing

If you've given up refreshing the Play Store listing for the Nexus 4, we wouldn't blame you at this point. There's no indication when these will be back in stock from Google directly, and that's really unfortunate. If you do happen to go to the Play Store though, you'll be greeted with a "Special Offer from T-Mobile" notice. If you follow the link, you're taken to T-Mobile's online store to buy it on-contract for $199. Curiously enough, this is showing up on both the 8 and 16GB models -- odd considering that 16GB is the only capacity sold by T-Mobile.

This really doesn't make any sense to us. Google has put the Nexus 4 at an extremely aggressive price point, one that's meant to show the great value of buying it directly from the Play Store. Pushing users to the more expensive on-contract option just because its out of stock at the moment is very odd. Google pushing the device with a contract from T-Mobile seems to go directly against what it's trying to accomplish with the "Devices" section of the Play Store.

Video Marketing ? Ideas for the Clueless Producer - Internet ...

Most people know how well videos work to get you traffic, but few realize just how easy it is to make them. I?ve met marketers who are always saying, ?I?ll get around to it someday? because they just don?t have any ideas to get them started. It?s incredibly easy and here are a few very basic but effective ideas.

Get in Front of the Camera

Video marketing for beginners!

?

You can make great videos by just setting up the camera and talking to it. I know how terrifying that might sound, but just imagine you?re talking to a good friend. Take some time and shoot a few experimental videos. At first, it?ll be awkward and weird. You won?t be used to seeing yourself on video. But after you?ve done a few scrap videos, you?ll start to get the feel for it.

What?s important when you do videos like this is your enthusiasm and personality. If you do a few and decide it?s just not for you, enlist somebody else. Family members are the cheapest option. As long as you?ve got a good script and a winning personality, you can make good videos. For your subject, take any kind of problem in your niche and tell your audience how to solve it. Videos can be just a few minutes long.

Slideshows and Presentations

A good alternative to getting on camera is to make a slideshow. There are software programs that do this for you. You load them up with your text and whatever images you want to use. All you need to do is edit and add the voiceover. If you don?t like the sound of your own voice, you can hire a freelancer to do it for you.

Inside Your Industry

Videos that take your audience ?inside? your industry are always popular. They feel like you?re letting them in on the secret world of your business. This doesn?t have to be anything too earth-shattering. Just show them how your company makes its products or introduce them to your staff. If they like your brand, they?ll be interested to know what goes on behind the scenes.

Interview the Experts

Interviewing known experts in your niche is a great way to make videos. First of all, you don?t have to write an entire script; just questions. Second, you can pretty much nail it on the first take. But the best thing about interview videos is that you get the experts? audience as well as your own. The expert also gets increased exposure through the video, so it?s a win-win for both.

Contact people in your niche that have a strong online presence. Send them an email asking if they?d like to participate and tell them it?ll only take a few minutes of their time. If they agree, set up a time and interview them on Skype if you can?t meet them in person.

Creative Ways to Use Your Product

Another good idea for videos is to show your audience all the ways they can use your product. In other words, show it in action. This is powerful because you?re showing, not just telling. Maybe you can also think of some creative uses for your product they wouldn?t have imagined.

The key to video marketing is to keep your videos short and simple. People want videos that are quick and easy to digest. This approach is also better for you because the more videos you have out there, the more exposure you?ll get.

St. Thomas? Coach Caruso Dishes On Winning 1st Playoff Game

(credit: Greg Smith/St. Thomas)

(credit: Greg Smith/St. Thomas)

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) ? Glenn Caruso is not only happy about his team?s success, but also about their ability to score late in the second quarter.

?In my belief there are four major predictors of success in football, and scoring before the half is one of those,? Caruso said.

It is the seventh time the team has scored with less than two minutes left in the second quarter.

?And it?s just huge, not just for the scoring but for momentum ? then you get the ball coming out of the second half,? he said.

The team beat St. Norbert College 48 to 17 on Saturday.

The Tommies are coming off their third consecutive undefeated season. Caruso said his team is not fancy, but always finds a way to get the job done.

?If you give us enough time, and you allow us to work through our mistakes and figure out what the other side of the ball is going to do, I think we can figure them out and in a reasonable manner. And that?s why you see a lot of scores before the half,? he said.

The team is heading into a holiday week and Week 2 of the playoffs. Caruso said he doesn?t plan to change up the game plan much.

?We do the same exact thing, except for after practice on Thursday we eat a big Thanksgiving dinner together,? he said.

The team takes on Elmhurst of Illinois next Saturday at O?Shaughnessy Stadium.

Moonshine makers set up shop in Ga. city hall

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. (AP) ? Moonshine distillers are making their first batches of legal liquor in this tiny Georgia town's city hall, not far from the mountains and the maroon, orange and gold canopy of trees that once hid bootleggers from the law.

A handful of moonshine distilleries are scattered around the South, but observers say this is the first they've ever seen right in a city hall. The distilleries come amid an increased interest in the U.S. for locally made specialty spirits and beer brewed in homes and micro-breweries.

The Dawsonville moonshine makers and city officials say the operation helps preserve a way of life. It also carries on traditions of an era when moonshine meant extra income for farmers, medicine for their children and helped fuel the beginnings of NASCAR racing.

"Dawson County was, sure enough, the moonshine capital of the world at one time," distiller Dwight Bearden said, as he checked on the still where the third batch of Dawsonville Moonshine was being prepared. "It was just a way of life back then."

The clanking of the still and the smell of corn and alcohol fill the room several yards and a few interior walls away from the offices of the city clerk, the mayor and other officials running the town about 60 miles north of Atlanta. The city leases the space to the distillery.

Outside city hall are old, abandoned cars from the days when Ford Coupes and other models from the 1930s and '40s hauled moonshine down Georgia Highway 9. The windy mountain highway became known as Thunder Road, because it was filled with the screaming sounds of car engines as bootleggers hauled their moonshine to Atlanta.

The young drivers were sometimes pursued by "revenue men" from the federal government, and the chases sometimes led to overturned cars and deadly wrecks. Townspeople are proud of how young Dawsonville men raced their cars at places like Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta after moonshine deliveries, which helped stock-car racing gain a following in its early days.

Today, cars on Georgia 9 slow for school zones on their way through Silver City and Coal Mountain ? two of the smallest communities from Dawsonville to Atlanta ? and the suburbs of Cumming, Alpharetta and Roswell farther south.

Inside the distillery are plenty of reminders of the days when moonshine was made in the surrounding foothills.

Entrepreneur Cheryl "Happy" Wood points with pride to a portrait of her grandfather, Simmie Free, hanging on one wall.

"Mama said, 'When you get this going, I want you to hang this up," Wood said.

Free learned how to make moonshine from his father, who learned it from his father generations ago, she said.

"We grew up around it, and it was our medicine," Wood said. Cough medicine was among its medicinal uses, she said.

Bearden, 56, recalls how extra income from his family's moonshining helped feed him as a child, and often meant a better Christmas if sales were good.

There are a handful of other moonshine distilleries in Southern states such as North Carolina, but officials from state and national groups say they aren't aware of any operating in a city hall.

"That's a new one for me," said Gregory Minchak, a spokesman for the National League of Cities.

J. Katie McConnell, senior associate for economic development at the League of Cities, has been studying the craft beer industry in recent months, and how small breweries and distilleries have sprung up and expanded in many communities. In Washington, D.C., for instance, the city's first gin distillery in more than a century opened this year, she said.

Wood has been planning the distillery for about five years. As she searched for a site, she and city officials began to realize that city hall would be an ideal spot, Dawsonville Mayor W. James Grogan said. The idea was that the distillery would tie into the city's history since it would be right next-door to the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Museum, Grogan said.

The distillery has reached several key milestones this year.

Last week, the distillery was delivering the second batch of moonshine it's made to its distributor, which has orders from liquor stores and other businesses around the state. Georgia law prohibits the distillery from selling its liquor at the site, but allows a distributor to ship it to stores with a liquor license, where it can be sold legally.

Wood recently got approval from state officials to offer small samples for tourists to taste.

State Rep. Rusty Kidd of Milledgeville, who introduced that bill during the most recent session, said Thursday he believes there will be more legislation during the upcoming session that would allow the Dawsonville distillery and others in the state to sell a single bottle of moonshine to tourists who want to take one home.

The samples will be offered on a counter made from wood cut by one of the distillery's employees, Bob Suchke of Dahlonega. Tin covering the front of the tasting counter came from an old barn, Wood said.

Locally made and locally grown products are a key aspect of the business, she said. A batch of apples fermenting last week came from the north Georgia town of Ellijay, about 30 miles away, she said.

The local movement has been a successful one in north Georgia, where several vineyards dot the mountain landscape and offer tastings of wines made with locally grown grapes. In Blue Ridge, at least one apple orchard brews and bottles its own apple and peach ciders.

Corn used by the distillery is also grown locally, and the distillery sticks to authentic recipes and doesn't use any sugar, Wood said.

"This ain't sugar liquor," she said, "this is the real deal."

Prove China spy allegations or 'shut up,' ambassador says

Beijing's representative in Ottawa says Chinese firms are not involved in foreign espionage and he challenges anyone who says otherwise to produce evidence or keep quiet, in a rare interview airing Saturday on CBC Radio's The House.

Zhang Junsai, China's ambassador to Canada, tells host Evan Solomon, "I can assure you that our companies working in other countries are strictly doing business according to the local laws."

"If you really have the evidence, come [out] with it. If not... shut up," Zhang says in no uncertain terms.

The Chinese ambassador's comments come on the heels of a scathing report released by a U.S. intelligence committee last month, warning of the security risks associated with doing business with two of China's leading telecommunications firms, Huawei and ZTE.

The ambassador said "even the United States could not give out evidence."

However, as CBC's Greg Weston reported days after the report was made public, that same U.S. intelligence committee has turned over to the FBI evidence of possible bribery and corruption by Huawei, one of the largest telecom companies in the world.

In an interview with CBC News after the U.S. report was released, the chairman of the committee, House Representative Mike Rogers, warned that Canada's national security was equally at risk.

Zhang said the "so-called security concerns" are "so far, groundless."

China's ambassador blamed the allegations of espionage against Chinese firms on "a Cold War mentality."

CNOOC's bid for Nexen

But a controversial bid by a Chinese state-owned company has raised concerns about growing Chinese investment in Canada's natural resources.

And while the federal government is reviewing a $15-billion proposed takeover by China National Offshore Oil Corp. of Calgary's Nexen Inc. under the Investment Canada Act, the Chinese ambassador told Solomon there's nothing to fear.

"We're here not to grab your resources. We're here to participate," Zhang said, pointing to the fact that no oil or gas has been shipped from Canada to China yet.

The Chinese ambassador said Canada was "one of the best destination" for Chinese companies to invest partly because of our "transparent policies."

Official Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair has come out swinging against the deal, saying his New Democrats do not believe it's in Canada's best interest.

Members of the Conservative caucus are also said to be grappling with the bid, as are a majority of Canadians, who recent surveys suggest are uncomfortable with a major domestic oil company being sold to a Chinese government enterprise.

The federal government, however, is apparently facing pressure from industry to approve the bid in exchange for further reciprocity from China.

The review period has been extended to Dec. 10.

Investment treaty with China

The Conservatives have also come under heavy scrutiny from opposition parties and critics who have sounded the alarm over an investment treaty Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently signed with China, saying Canada will come out on the losing end of the deal.

Zhang brushed off the concerns, saying that China has signed similar investment treaties with more than a hundred countries and describing it as an "international standard agreement."

The treaty, formally known as a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, could have been ratified via a cabinet decree as early as 21 sitting days after it was tabled in Parliament on Sept. 26. But so far there's no indication on the federal government's website of orders-in-council that it has come into law.

Zhang said building "mutual trust" between the two countries is a priority, adding that the economic and trading relations between the two countries are "very important."

This week, Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping succeeded outgoing President Hu Jintao as the country's new leader, assuming the top posts in the Communist Party.

Zhang said political reform is "high" on the government and party's agenda.

India dominate struggling England

First Test, day two, Ahmedabad

India 521-8 dec v England 41-3

Match scorecard

A Cheteshwar Pujara double hundred and three late wickets put India in complete control of the first Test against England in Ahmedabad.

After India declared on 521-8, England lost debutant Nick Compton, night-watchman James Anderson and Jonathan Trott to close on 41-3.

Pujara earlier made an unbeaten 206, with Yuvraj Singh adding 74.

Analysis

"We've had 18 overs and already we're talking about the follow-on, which tells us everything. At the moment, it's not looking good. When you bat first on slow pitches, you know it's going to turn - and you can practice as much as you want, but when you're out in the middle with four men around the bat chirping away, it's a completely different game."

Graeme Swann claimed 5-144, while James Anderson's strike was the only wicket in a combined 70 overs of pace.

In contrast, on a slow pitch showing signs of sharp turn in the evening session, India opened the bowling with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who combined with Pragyan Ojha to inflict late damage on the tourists.

Compton looked relatively untroubled before Ashwin ripped one between bat and pad, and Anderson offered a catch to short leg off slow left-armer Ojha.

When Ashwin also had Trott taken off bat and pad, England had lost three wickets for four runs in 13 balls, once again wilting in the face of quality spin bowling on the subcontinent.

If India had an early grasp of how to take 20 wickets on a slow, low pitch, the realisation dawned too late on England, who left out Monty Panesar and selected Swann as their only specialist slow bowler.

Doubling up

Cheteshwar Pujara became only the fifth Indian to score a double century against England:

224 - Vinod Kambli, Mumbai, 1993

222 - Gundappa Viswanath, Chennai, 1982

217 - Rahul Dravid, Oval, 2002

206* - Cheteshwar Pujara, Ahmedabad, 2012

203* - Nawab of Pataudi, Delhi, 1964

In total, the tourists sent down 90 overs of spin, with the part-time off-breaks of Kevin Pietersen, who had Ashwin caught behind, managing a breakthrough before any of the three frontline seamers.

Anderson's reward for being the most impressive paceman was having Zaheer Khan caught by Trott at gully, while Stuart Broad was innocuous and Tim Bresnan bowled only 19 overs over two days.

Indeed, with Samit Patel struggling badly with his length, England's only real threat came from Swann, just as it did on the first day.

The off-spinner fully deserved his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests, completed when Mahendra Singh Dhoni gloved the ball on to his stumps in attempting a sweep.

Before that, even Swann came in for punishment in a fifth-wicket stand of 130 between Pujara and Yuvraj.

Left-handed Yuvraj looked especially keen to hit England's most dangerous bowler out of the attack, lofting a straight drive down the ground for six in the fifth over of the day, which began with India 323-4.

Analysis

"This has been a copybook Test for India so far: win the toss, bat long, declare sometime after tea on the second day and put the tourists in under pressure with men round the bat. Cook will play his own, hawk-like game tomorrow but we'll wait and see with Pietersen. I think he'll be fairly aggressive and worth watching. England need a significant innings from at least two batsmen. All the impetus is with India."

He dished out similar treatment to Patel, hitting the left-armer in the same direction for another maximum as India did not lose a wicket in the morning session for the second day in succession.

Patel had his revenge in unlikely circumstances just after lunch, when a waist-high full toss that Yuvraj could have hit anywhere found Swann at long-on.

After the more circumspect Pujara survived a good shout for lbw and flashed an edge past slip - both off Swann - he did not offer a chance, regularly working singles through the leg side and rocking on to the back foot to pull when Patel dropped short.

The elegant right-hander was still at the crease when captain Dhoni declared 40 minutes after tea, leaving England 18 overs to negotiate before the close.

That task looked within their grasp until Ashwin accounted for Compton, sparking the collapse that required Pietersen to accompany captain Alastair Cook to the close.

NY man who claims $5M lottery swindle struggled with debt; brothers charged, store suspended

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - A maintenance worker says he and his wife were forced to file for bankruptcy after he was conned out of a $5 million lottery ticket that two brothers have been charged with trying to falsely claim.

Robert Miles was identified in court papers as the rightful owner of the scratch-off ticket. Two Syracuse brothers face charges of attempted grand larceny and possession of stolen property after they claimed they bought the winning ticket at their parents' store.

The Lottery Division, which planted a fake story with the media to lure the real winner to come forward, has suspended the parents' license to sell tickets at least until after the criminal case is completed.

Miles told The Syracuse Post-Standard ( http://bit.ly/S0wjdw) that he bought the winning ticket in 2006 at the corner store near the apartment complex where he works as a maintenance man. Prosecutors say the store owners' son Andy Ashkar told Miles the ticket was worth only $5,000. Ashkar and his brother, Nayel, were arrested Tuesday for trying to claim the jackpot.

Miles told the newspaper that he had a lunchtime ritual of buying as much as $200 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets and knew he'd won big with the $20 ticket in 2006. When he brought the ticket to the market, he knew it was worth $5 million, but Andy Ashkar scanned it and said it was worth only $5,000, Miles said.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick has said Miles didn't realize the true value of the ticket at the time he cashed it in and that Ashkar took advantage of his confusion.

Miles said Ashkar ran out the door of the store and drove off in a car with the ticket after giving him $4,000 and saying there was a $1,000 cashing fee. He said he ran after the car, yelling for it to stop, but then dropped the fight because he'd gotten high on crack cocaine the night before and wasn't feeling well.

Friends told him to pursue the matter but he never did because, he told the paper, it would have been his word against the Ashkars'. After the bogus story was floated in October, Miles' friends again urged him to come forward. He didn't. A police officer who had heard about it finally tracked him down and persuaded him to go to authorities.

A woman who answered the phone at a number listed in Miles' name said it was not his number and a second phone number listed in Miles' name was disconnected Thursday. Fitzpatrick and lottery spokeswoman Carolyn Hapeman did not immediately return calls seeking comment Thursday.

Miles told the newspaper that he no longer uses drugs, has held a steady job for years and is a good father to his two children and three stepdaughters.

"On the day that they did that to me, God spoke to me and said, `You know, I'm going to double that,'" Miles told the newspaper. "So I knew one day it was going to come out and people were going to believe what I was saying."

The Ashkar brothers, both employed as managers at area auto dealerships, were being held on $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond after their arraignment Wednesday. Their lawyer, Bob Durr, said the brothers are adamant that they legitimately own the ticket.

Video: Guy Fieri suspects ?another agenda? behind review

>> well, we're talking about that scathing review of guy fieri 's new restaurant . some people are asking, was it too harsh? we'll ask guy about that in a moment. but first, katie with the rest of the story. good morning.

>> reporter: -- in this case a grown man -- guy fieri , food network star.

>> you were expecting a flavor reference, i know you were.

>> reporter: tenth highest paid chef in america, popular enough for an snl spoof.

>> i for one go bizerki for turkey.

>> reporter: and a seriously bruised restaurant owner. did you try that blue drink the critic pete wells asks. the one that glows like nuclear waste ? the watermelon margarita. the entire restaurant review is questions. 34 of them, each scathing. why did the toasted marshmallow taste like fish? when we hear the words donkey sauce, which part of the donkey are we supposed to think about? but it's not just the food, wells doesn't spare fieri either. when you cruise around the country for your show to the unfancy places where americans like to get down and greasy, do you really mean it? or is it all an act?

>> mmm, that's good.

>> reporter: the review of guy's american kitchen and bar in time square is being called the worst restaurant review in the paper's history.

>> i think in this scenario, pete used his skill as a word smith to create a more harsh environment in which to describe the restaurant and to create this kind of aura of negativity around the experience that he had at guy fieri 's restaurant .

>> reporter: supporters by the dozens didn't care for the negativity taking to the facebook page telling the chef to ignore all those critics in new york .

>> it's just another pompous new yorker, i don't know. i don't know. i didn't agree with it.

>> reporter: for what it's worth, that last guy said he really loved the awesome pretzel chicken tenders . the times is defending the review saying he was here four times and each time he wasn't able to celebrate good american food . the only non-question in the review was at the very end, one word, a sarcastic thanks.

>> thank you to you. and guy fieri is here with us now exclusively. you flew here all night on the red eye to be here. what was your reaction when you read this review? it must have felt like a punch in the gut.

>> i -- punch in the gut. i just thought it was ridiculous. i mean, i read reviews. you know, there's good and bad in the restaurant business, but that to me went so overboard it really seemed like there was another agenda.

>> you have a problem with not what it said but with its tone?

>> the tone, the sarcasm, the question style. i mean, i think we all know what's going on here. he came in with a different agenda. four times to a restaurant that's been open two months, that's tough times . especially this size of a restaurant .

>> this reviewer says he came not just once or twice, but four different times , obviously found the cuisine to be lacking. is there anything in this review that you think strikes a chord where you acknowledge it wasn't up to my own standard?

>> without question, i've been in the restaurant business for 25 years. this is an ever changing, ever evolving process. you get new guys in, some guys out, different timings that go on. and do we do it perfect? no? are we striving to do it perfect? yes, but that's what we're all doing in the business.

>> one thing you've mentioned to me, why it is the "new york times " chose to review a restaurant like this. if you go on yelp, which is a place where regular folks go on and review restaurants, you get an average of 2 1/2 stars out of 5, 56 reviews, so it's kind of not necessarily knocking people's socks off.

>> and at this point in time at two months, not really expecting to. we're trying to. we're trying as hard as we can to make it right, to do it right, we've got a pretty big menu. you look at the food we're doing here, the cedar plank salmon or the burger, we're doing this, forming it by hand. we make the mashed potatoes for ever service. this is what's taking place. is it perfect right now? no. are we striving for it? yeah. i think those will change. it's two months now, let's see where we are at six months.

>> there are a lot of kitchens around the country where the famous chef comes in, lends his name but is sort of hands off and isn't involved. is this your baby? did you design this menu?

>> not only did we design the restaurant , we spent a year and a half doing this. wrote the menu, brought my culinary team in to work with this team here that's on premise all the time. i did the training for the front of the house, i did the training for the back of the house. i was here pain staking hours. but this is what you do, what you love. people see me as a tv guy, i'm a chef, i'm into restaurants, i have 11 of them, 7 in california. to me, and again, that's what this is. this is more heart and soul. this is not just a name stamp.

>> one thing that the reviewer said when asked by the "new york times " public editor saying he didn't expect a fine dining experience. didn't think this was going to be gourmet cuisine. but said, quote, this is important american food that makes a lot of people happy. do you think you fell short of that?

>> in his opinion, that's what he's saying. no, do i think i'm falling short? no. by no means. i'm doing the type of foods that america loves and we're doing it the right way. could we make mistakes? absolutely. do we strive to be the best? yes. to me it's impossible to come in and have a dining experience and have every single thing wrong unless you come in with a different agenda and you want to sensationalize something and blow it out of the water. it's a great way to make a name for yourself. go after a celebrity chef who is not a new yorker.

>> and if you have -- you could say anything to this reviewer right now, what would you say?

>> you're welcome? i mean, it's a great -- like i said, i stand by my food, by my team, who will continue to do great. and i appreciate you giving me a chance to talk about it because it is the real deal.

>> all right, guy fieri , thanks for being here.

>> eat some of this.

>> you're going to love it.

>> i'll try it and report

Rats Direct Inhalations For Smell Focus

60-Second Science

Rats change the way air flows across the insides of their nostrils to direct the scent to the nasal region where it can be best detected. Gretchen Cuda Kroen reports.

More 60-Second Science

Imagine if you could focus your nose, the way you focus your eyes. Scientists now believe that animals with a highly developed sense of smell, like rats and dogs, do just that.

Similar to the way we taste sweet, salty, sour and bitter on different parts of the tongue, animals detect various smells in different parts of the nose. Researchers at the University of Chicago hypothesized that rats, by changing the way air flows across the insides of the nostrils, could direct the scent to the nasal region where it could be best detected.?

Turns out they were right. When presented with different odors, rats actually changed the way they sniffed. For example, long slow sniffs for hard to detect scents, or short fast ones for easy ones.

Rats even sniffed differently while learning a new scent than when the smell was familiar. The study is in the Journal of Neuroscience. [Daniel Rojas-Libano and Leslie M. Kay, Interplay between Sniffing and Odorant Sorptive Properties in the Rat]

The researchers say the finding shows that there?s more to a good sense of smell than originally thought. A sensitive nose is important, but so is how you use it.
