A stunning moment just happened on Fox News...

Shepard Smith was in the midst of narrating one of his famous car chases.

However it appeared to end in tragedy, as the suspect ran out of his car and shot himself in the head on the middle of a field.

After a quick break, the network cut back to Shep Smith, who was stunned and apologized for not cutting away sooner.

He explained that there was a problem with the delay.

"We really messed up."

Regular refs to work Thursday game after agreement

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL's regular officiating crews are back. Their return couldn't have come soon enough for many players, coaches and fans.

After two days of marathon negotiations ? and mounting frustration throughout the league ? the NFL and the officials' union announced at midnight Thursday that a tentative eight-year agreement had been reached to end a lockout that began in June.

The deal came on the heels of Seattle's chaotic last-second win over Green Bay on Monday night in which the replacement officials struggled. Commissioner Roger Goodell, who was at the bargaining table Tuesday and Wednesday, said the regular officials would work the Browns-Ravens game at Baltimore on Thursday night.

"We are glad to be getting back on the field for this week's games," NFL Referees Association president Scott Green said.

And plenty of players echoed that sentiment.

"Never thought I would be excited for the refs to come back to work but it's about time it was definitely necessary!" Cleveland return specialist Josh Cribbs tweeted Thursday morning.

Minnesota punter Chris Kluwe chimed in, too.

"It was a noble experiment, but I think ultimately a failed experiment, from what we've seen. It'll be good not to have to worry about that when we're on the field," he said. "It's good that it won't be a distraction anymore."

Shortly after the news broke, Buffalo running back C.J. Spiller tweeted, "Welcome back REFS."

The tentative deal must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members. They plan to vote Friday and Saturday in Dallas.

For the Packers, Redskins, Lions and other teams who voiced their displeasure with calls that might have swayed games, the agreement doesn't change their records. But after having replacements for the first three weeks, triggering a wave of outrage that threatened to disrupt the rest of the season, Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck probably spoke for his peers by simply echoing Spiller: "Welcome back."

The agreement hinged on working out pension and retirement benefits for the officials, who are part-time employees of the league. The tentative pact calls for their salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019.

Under the proposed deal, the current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service. The defined benefit plan will then be frozen.

Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution arrangement. The annual league contribution made on behalf of each game official will begin with an average of more than $18,000 per official and increase to more than $23,000 per official in 2019.

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials on a full-time basis to work year round, including on the field. The NFL also will be able to retain additional officials for training and development, and can assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.

"As you know, this has to be ratified and we know very little about it, but we're excited to be back. And ready," referee Ed Hochuli told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "And I think that's the most important message ? that we're ready."

The longest contract with on-field officials in NFL history was reached with the assistance of two federal mediators.

Replacements have been used both to play and officiate NFL games before. In 1987, the players went on strike and three games were played with replacement players. In 2001, the first week of the regular season was officiated by replacements before a deal was worked out.

One big difference: The replacements 11 years ago generally came from the highest levels of college football. These officials were from lower college divisions or other leagues such as Arena Football.

After Seattle's 14-12 victory against the Packers, their ability to call fast-moving NFL games drew mounting criticism, with ESPN analyst Jon Gruden calling their work "tragic and comical."

The Seahawks beat Green Bay on a desperation pass into the end zone on the final play. Packers safety M.D. Jennings had both hands on the ball in the end zone, and when he fell to the ground in a scrum, both Jennings and Seahawks receiver Golden Tate had their arms on the ball.

The closest official to the play, at the back of the end zone, signaled for the clock to stop, while another official at the sideline ran in and then signaled touchdown.

The NFL said in a statement Tuesday that the touchdown pass should not have been overturned ? but acknowledged Tate should have been called for offensive pass interference before the catch. The league also said there was no indisputable evidence to reverse the call made on the field.

That drew even louder howls of disbelief. Some coaches, including Miami's Joe Philbin and Cincinnati's Marvin Lewis, tried to restore some calm by instructing players not to speak publicly on the issue.

Fines against two coaches for incidents involving the replacements were handed out Wednesday.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was docked $50,000 for trying to grab an official's arm Sunday to ask for an explanation of a call after his team lost at Baltimore. And Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was tagged for $25,000 for what the league called "abuse of officials" in the Redskins' loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. Two other coaches, Denver's John Fox and assistant Jack Del Rio, were fined Monday for incidents involving the replacements the previous week.

"I accept the discipline and I apologize for the incident," Belichick said.

Players were in no mood for apologies from anyone.

"I'll probably get in trouble for this, but you have to have competent people," Carolina receiver Steve Smith said. "And if you're incompetent, get them out of there."

And now they are out.

How Bad Credit Can Stop You From Buying a Home | AOL Real Estate

Melissa was about to try and live the American Dream. Eager to buy a house, she applied for a pre-approved bank loan only to discover that an old unpaid bill that she resolved two years ago is still lingering on her credit report. That's dragging down her score.

And she's getting desperate.

"I can't buy a house without ... these things corrected," she wrote in response to a recent story on Credit.com. "Please, please help!"

Most Americans understand the financial and emotional importance of buying a home. Even though the rate of homeownership has declined from a height of 69.2 percent in 2004 to 65.5 percent in the second quarter of 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, it remains the case that a solid majority of Americans prefer owning a home to renting.

"Traditionally, owning has won out over renting for many reasons," says Gerri Detweiler, Credit.com's consumer credit expert. "Owning a home is still one of the main ways that Americans build wealth over time."

But some credit experts are wondering: What's the rush? At Credit.com, we receive emails, blog comments and forum posts from people with damaged credit scores asking how they can buy a home. And in most cases, the question is asked with a sense of urgency.

Many readers with low credit scores don't just want to buy a home. They want to buy a home now. Steve Campbell, who wrote in August that he and his wife recently filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, asked: "Can we buy a home anytime soon?"

But Barry Paperno, a credit expert and Credit.com's community director, wonders whether that's really the right question to be asking. Perhaps a more relevant question, Paperno says, is: "Are you sure that your financial situation will be stable enough to make those monthly payments for the next 30 years?"

Homeownership has many rewards, but consider the risks, Paperno points out. Unlike during the mortgage bubble, buying a home these days usually requires a significant down payment, and owning it may require substantial investments in renovation, maintenance, insurance and property taxes. If a homeowner loses a job or her income goes down, and she finds herself incapable of making those monthly payments, all of the money she's invested could be lost, Paperno says.

In addition, if a renter finds he can no longer pay the rent, he can simply move out, possibly losing his security deposit. But leaving an apartment is rarely an event that's recorded on a consumer's credit report, whereas losing a home to foreclosure causes serious damage to a credit score.

"It can knock more than a hundred points off your score, and you will not be able to get another mortgage for another few years," Paperno says. "If you're buying a house for security, what happens if you lose your job? How secure is it, really?"

Buying a home still makes lots of sense for the average consumer, Paperno and Detweiler agree. But in some cases, consumers with low credit scores might find it makes more sense to put off purchasing, especially if they are getting turned down for loans, or if the interest rate offers they're receiving now seem exorbitantly high.

"If you're willing to wait just a little bit longer, even 18 to 24 months, you can boost your credit, you may be able to get a better rate," Detweiler says.

There is a counterpoint to this argument, however. In today's weak housing market, an interest rate of seven percent might be abnormally high, especially when people with the best credit scores can get interest rates as low as 3.49 percent, according to Freddie Mac's latest report. But Detweiler had great credit when she bought her home in the late 1990s, and her interest rate then was seven percent.

Which is to say that just because you don't qualify for today's record-low interest rates does not necessarily mean that you're getting a bad deal.

"You may have a tradeoff where you're paying more in interest, but you're still taking advantage of lower overall home prices," Detweiler says. "So it still may be a good idea to buy as long as you get into a decent loan for the long term."

Whatever you eventually decide, it may be best to slow the process down and make sure that buying is the right idea for you in the short term, the credit experts say. The American Dream has a strong pull, as do home prices that have lost much of their housing bubble value. But don't let the dream of homeownership make you feel rushed to make a decision that could hurt you for years to come.

"Don't be discouraged," Detweiler says. "If now's not the right time for you to buy, that doesn't mean that you will never own your own home. A couple of years can make a big difference."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney heads to Colorado on Sunday, the first stop in what advisers call an "intense battleground state schedule" aimed at countering GOP criticism that his campaign is mismanaged and misdirected.

The former Massachusetts governor will have the stage to himself in a state that will help decide the presidential contest. President Barack Obama was expected to be in Washington and had no official business or campaign activity scheduled.

For Romney, an evening rally at a Denver-area high school represents his first public event of the weekend. With the election less than seven weeks away, the Republican candidate is facing pressure to spend less time raising money and more time explaining his plans to voters in swing states.

He plans to do that beginning with the Colorado rally. Romney then launches a three-day bus tour in Ohio on Monday followed by a stop in Virginia ? all states Obama won in 2008 and held by Republicans four years earlier.

The schedule shift comes in the last full week before the presidential debates move the campaign into a new phase ? one which Romney advisers suggest could prove pivotal following several weeks marked by negative attention, missteps and Republican concerns.

Already facing reports of internal finger-pointing and foreign policy questions, Romney suffered another setback last week when a secretly recorded video surfaced showing the Republican standard bearer declaring that almost half of Americans are dependent upon government and see themselves as victims.

On Friday, he released his 2011 tax returns showing income of $13.6 million, largely from investment income.

In an interview set to air Sunday night, Romney told CBS' "60 Minutes" that his campaign is moving in the right direction.

"It doesn't need a turnaround. We've got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States," Romney says, according to remarks released in advance by CBS.

While national polls remain tight, polls in several swing states ? Colorado among them ? suggest that Obama has opened narrow leads in the states that matter most. Obama won Colorado by 9 points four years ago, but the state went to a Republican in the previous three presidential elections.

Romney spent much of his weekend in high-dollar fundraisers in southern California, a state held by Democrats for nearly a quarter century. As the Republican courted wealthy donors at the Beverly Hills Hilton on Saturday, Obama worked to squash GOP hopes for a resurgence in Wisconsin, where the president assailed Romney's economic approach before an energized gathering of 18,000, Obama's biggest crowd of the campaign.

Obama faulted Romney for advancing a top-down economic approach that "never works."

"The country doesn't succeed when only the folks at the very top are doing well," Obama told the massive crowd. "We succeed when the middle class is doing well."

In Beverly Hills, Romney raised $6 million at a Saturday evening fundraiser that attracted celebrities Dennis Miller and Gary Sinise. Before a group of more than 1,000 California Republicans, Romney kept up his criticism of the president for fostering a culture of dependency.

"This is a tough time. These are our brothers and sisters. These are not statistics. These are people," Romney declared. "The president's policies ? these big-government, big-tax monolithic policies ? are not working."

Obama, too, looked to celebrities to help raise cash to continue bankrolling the deluge of ads already saturating hotly contested states.

Baseball great Hank Aaron supplied the star power at Obama's Milwaukee fundraisers.

"As one who wore the number 44 on his back for decades, I ask you to join me in helping the 44th president of the United States hit a grand slam," said Aaron.

But Obama's schedule has focused more on voters than donors in recent weeks. The president's campaign says Obama attended seven fundraisers and 14 public events since the day after the Democratic National Convention two weeks ago.

Over the last week alone, Romney has attended five public events ? including three rallies ? and more than a dozen fundraisers.

Romney adviser Kevin Madden defended the fundraising focus, while highlighting a shift toward swing states in the coming days

"We're here raising the resources we're going to need to compete in all those battleground states through Election Day," Madden said. "That's also been matched with a really intense battle ground state schedule that's going to be coming up starting Sunday night. We're keeping very busy."

But conservative worry remains.

"The Romney campaign has to get turned around. This week I called it incompetent, but only because I was being polite. I really meant 'rolling calamity,'" Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan, a former speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan, wrote late last week.

Speaking at the Beverly Hills Hilton, Romney's California finance committee chairman Thomas Tellefsen sought to reassure supporters.

"I wanted to share some thoughts with you tonight. They can provide you some comfort. Polls are not elections. The voters have not yet spoken," Tellefsen said.

Meanwhile, Obama made the case against Romney in Milwaukee, countering Romney's call to change Washington from the inside with an appeal to voters to help him break through partisan gridlock with pressure on Congress from the outside. He said that despite economic troubles, his administration has made progress and has made "practical and specific" proposals to create jobs.

"We've seen half a million new jobs in manufacturing, the fastest pace since the 1990s," he said. "And so the choice now is, do we reverse that progress or do we move forward?"

Double Dragon Neon ? A Critical Hit! - Video Game Reviews

Back in the NES days, Double Dragon was possibly the most rented game in my household. When the Fighting Force games tried to revive the beat-em-up genre, I thought, ?someone needs to make a new Double Dragon.? When Rockstar released the ode to beat-em-ups The Warriors, I thought, ?someone needs to make a new Double Dragon.? WayForward?s Double Dragon Neon isn?t quite the game I?d been waiting for, but that doesn?t mean it?s not enjoyable in its own way.

Creating a modern installment of Double Dragon is a tricky prospect. The standard gameplay mechanics of traditional beat-em-ups haven?t aged well, and yet you don?t want to overhaul things so dramatically that it seems like a completely different game. Double Dragon may have been the title that popularized the genre ? in the same way that Doom first popularized the first person shooter ? but it was a series that already felt dated by its third installment, once Capcom and Konami threw their hats into the ring with games like Final Fight and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. How do you take an old, classic series and make it fresh and relevant again?

WayForward?s attempted solution did not involve making the game a remake, reboot, nor sequel. Instead, Double Dragon Neon is the videogame equivalent of movies like Starsky & Hutch, Land Of The Lost, and The Brady Bunch Movie ? it?s a game that parodies the series it was based on, and the decade it came from.

As a result, Billy and Jimmy now have the personalities of Bill and Ted, complete with air guitar at the end of each level. Co-op ? the preferred way to play due to the ability to revive your downed partner ? has been renamed ?Bro-Op,? because it?s funny. Online Bro-Op isn?t yet available, but there are plans to patch it in later.

New abilities are unlocked by collecting cassette tapes dropped by enemies, though only two tapes can be equipped at any given time: one passive ability, and one active ability. The more duplicate tapes that are collected, the more those abilities level up. These tapes can also be purchased or upgraded in shops found in certain levels, a la Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game ? incidentally, a feature they borrowed from River City Ransom, which was made by the same people who created Double Dragon. And so it all comes full circle.

Unfortunately, a side-effect of the leveling system is that the fighting starts out feeling tediously sluggish at the beginning. Things get better once you?ve played through a few levels, but it could be off-putting to people who are only trying out the demo. It?s typically wiser for developers to have the fighting already start off enjoyable and ramp up to being even better, rather than starting players off with what feels like essentially a handicap.

While Double Dragon Neon attempts to further modernize things by including an overhead map in the style of modern beat-em-ups like Scott Pilgrim and Castle Crashers, they?ve also stubbornly held onto a few aspects of ?Nintendo hard? games that might?ve been better left behind. There are no checkpoints in the game, so once you lose all your lives, you have to start the level over. Mind you, this is a huge improvement over classic beat-em-ups, which required you to start over again from the very first level once you ran out of lives or continues, but we?ve long since moved beyond this.

Also, be careful if you decide to purchase lives in any of the shops ? your lives will reset once you?ve beaten that level.

However, there are other classic gaming tropes whose inclusion are much more welcome. Gamers of the ?80s loved sharing with each other secret areas or glitches in games, and Double Dragon Neon has several waiting to be found. Maybe hitting that punching bag just the right number of times will unlock a glitched-out level, or crouching a certain number of times in the right spot will unlock a hidden helper.

And I can?t tell you how much I miss button codes. Only one has been revealed for Double Dragon Neon so far, but I really hope there are more. I?d love if those made a return.

The spoof-like nature of the game may come as a disappointment to longtime fans who were hoping for a game that would return the series to its gritty The Warriors-inspired roots, and make us forget all about the cheesy animated series and awful movie. But is it only down to nostalgia goggles that I view the series as being worthy of a revival at all? The truth is, Double Dragon Neon?s opening ? in which Billy?s girlfriend Marian getting slugged in the stomach and kidnapped, and Billy?s only reaction is ?not this again?? ? is a pretty spot-on mockery of a series that tried to top Marian being slugged in the stomach and rescued by having her shot in the stomach and ?revenged.?

Even then, I spent most of the game unsure how I felt about an officially licensed Double Dragon spoof. They did win me over in the end, but not until after the moment the credits finished rolling. It was the one single moment that suddenly made the entire game worth it, a perfect ending that only would have worked for a game with this tone. Though it seems like such a long way to go for such a brief payoff.
