The mission of Wholesome Wave is to empower and equip people to make better food choices by supporting innovative nutrition programs in historically underserved communities. Wholesome Wave's current programs promote both access and affordability of fresh produce in over 250 communities across the country.

Position Overview:

Wholesome Wave is seeking a passionate, innovative, and self-motivated Communications & Public Outreach Associate to assist and join the Director of Communications/Policy Outreach in expanding and building out the communications function at Wholesome Wave. The Communications & Public Outreach Associate will be an integral part of the Communications team and assist the Director of Communications in partnering and collaborating with a broad range of departments at the organization, including Development, Programs, and Policy.

The Communications & Public Outreach Associate will be an action-oriented team player who is able to execute a variety of day-to-day responsibilities. She or he must be a strong copy writer and creative thinker with extensive knowledge about print collateral and design, website development and maintenance, social media, and emerging communications technologies. She or he must be a team player in the organization and able to support the Director of Communications in responding to a wide range of requests from departments across the firm.

Responsibilities:

The Communications & Public Outreach Associate will assist the Director of Communications in driving and supporting a wide range of ongoing communications activities including but not limited to collateral production, writing and editing, vendor management, and social media.

  • Support Director of Communications to design and implement funder deliverables, including but not limited to: blogs, social media promotion, press releases, etc.
  • Support the management of internal communications mechanisms for daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly updates to Development Department, staff, executive team and board.
  • Work in tandem with Director of Communications to maximize unique and compelling storytelling opportunities on traditional and social media fronts.
  • Be an in-house liaison for the Director of Communications when working remotely to communicate staff news, program partner updates and/or day-to-day updates.
  • Support Director of Communications to design, implement and manage seasonal program partner communication best practice webinars.
  • Monitor and record partner media mentions; note innovations, storytelling opportunities and branding successes or infringements.
  • Support Director of Communications to design and create content for collateral.
  • Log and manage best practices and detailed compilation of partner experiences to maintain an institutional communication memory bank.
  • Support the management of the Wholesome Wave website and blog.
  • Support the management of social media outlets and adhere to social media protocol.
  • Participate in WW staff meetings, retreats, and other organization functions.
  • Display a willingness to roll up one's sleeves and pitch in as needed

Specifically:

Communications Systems & Design:

Expectations are that this would require 40% of the communications associate's time.

  • Support the Director of Communications in overseeing and ensuring high-quality, effective media tools and materials for promotion of the organization:
    - Website
    - Social media
    - Print materials
    - Presentation materials
  • Assist the Director of Communications in responding to requests from the Development team with communications tools:
    - Donor recognition
    - Newsletters
    - Quarterly reports

Communications for Regional and National Media:

WW has a compelling model and innovations, founders who can attract media attention. These assets can be utilized to build the presence of the organization, attract resources, and promote the mission of the organization. Expectations are that this would require 20% of the Communications Associate's time.

  • Monitor and record media stories involving Wholesome Wave and WW partners
  • Monitor media and record important media stories that are of interest to WW staff and partners.
  • On a daily basis, engage in dialogue and discussion on social media sites about key WW topics.
  • Support Director of Communications in overseeing development of content for WW blog
    - Respond quickly to topical news stories on the blog
    - Encourage WW staff and partners to contribute to the blog
  • Assist in developing, tracking and reporting all electronic and print media including TV, blogs, etc.

Leverage Network of Partners:

WW has over 50 program partners in over 25 states, each selected because of their access to key constituencies and policy makers. Support the Director of Communications in implementing a comprehensive strategic communications plan to use this network for grassroots policy and social change. Expectations are that 40% of the Communications Associate's time would be spent on these.

  • Support the Director of Communications in building WW brand and increase opportunities for policy impact by gathering and disseminating partner program stories
  • Support the Director of Communications in developing media and policy change tool kits for partners, develop process for evaluating and responding to partner requests for media support
  • Assist Director of Communications in helping program staff support the development of partner learning community: webinars, blogs, electronic forum and other effective tools to develop partner capacity for communications and share best practices and innovations

Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in marketing/communications and/or journalism.
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to synthesize and improve existing written material, and the ability to write for different audiences and delivery channels (print, websites, social media, etc.) to effectively communicate Wholesome Wave's mission, impact, and value proposition to a wide range of stakeholders;
  • Superior attention to detail; ability to serve as a steward of quality for all external communications for Wholesome Wave;
  • Creative thinking with the ability to identify innovative ways to communicate and engage audiences through a variety of avenues;
  • Unwavering commitment to service and customer orientation;
  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to Wholesome Wave's mission and vision exemplified through professional background or a significant history of community involvement;
  • High level of interpersonal maturity, poise, and judgment;
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a growing, entrepreneurial, mission-driven team;
  • High comfort level with ambiguity and entrepreneurship;
  • Broad understanding of, and willingness to stay abreast of new media technologies, applications, and processes;
  • Proficiency in HTML desirable; Photoshop, InDesign, digital audio/video capture, and editing skills a plus;
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required

Compensation: Time and Classification

Reporting to: Director of Communications and Public Outreach

Location/Hours: Position is 40 hour/week, full-time exempt, based out of Wholesome Waves Bridgeport office Monday to Friday, requiring occasional offsite and night/weekend work for events, conferences.

There may be times when the associate might be required to perform duties outside of this job description, as reasonably requested by senior management.
