Gainesvilles new Mayor Pro Tem looking for retail growth now, industrial later

GAINESVILLE - Veteran Gainesville City Councilman George Wangemann is moving into his post as the city's second in command with an optimistic eye toward economic growth, but expects retail expansion is coming before industrial growth.

Tuesday Wangemann mixed and mingled with fellow officials and the public at a 4:30 p.m. reception in the Public Safety Complex lobby held an hour before the city's first meeting of the New Year. Fellow council members who chose Danny Dunagan for his first term as mayor picked Wangemann as mayor pro tem.

In Gainesville, City Council chooses the mayor and mayor pro tem, but that could change in the next couple of years with legislative approval of a charter change that calls for the mayor's election by the voters.

Wangemann has served two terms as mayor. He is hopeful the economic tide will turn this year and getting new jobs into town is his top priority.

"Nationally it seems to be, statewide it seems to be, and locally we probably have more influence over jobs than they do at the state or national level," Wangemann said. "I think we're going to see more retail come to Gainesville; I think industrial is going to be a little slower than the retail."

Wangemann readily admits he has no crystal ball when it comes to predicting when things will pick up, when new jobs will come.

"How many years it takes, I have no idea," Wangemann said. "I'm not an economist or prognosticator, I just hope it comes back sometime very soon."
