Do software engineers that work on automated test infrastructure get respect at top engineering companies like Google and Facebook?

I was one of the founding members of Facebook's test engineering team and never felt any lack of respect from either management or my colleagues in engineering. Occasional annoyance, sure, but that comes with the territory of building tools that tell people they've done something wrong.

At Facebook people who build tools to make engineers more efficient or effective get tons of respect. My assumption is that Google is similar, given the fact that the ex-Googlers we hired at FB didn't seem to require any convincing that tools were important and valuable.
