The Best Canned Tomato Soup: Our Taste Test Results

Here at HuffPost Taste, we love tomato soup. There is absolutely nothing in the world that's better at cozying up to grilled cheese, and we're fans of making it in big, hearty batches on our stovetops at home.

But no one's perfect. The flu hits. You've had a rough week at work. You're starving and need to make dinner in five minutes. None of those situations permit a leisurely hour of simmering and blending, so you've got to do it. When things get dire, you've got to go to the pantry (which as food lovers we equate with "going to the mattresses"). Lucky for you, some canned (or boxed, now that we're in 2013) tomato soups are actually pretty delicious. Our job was to find them and tell you all about it.

We blind-tasted 10 popular brands and flavors of tomato soup, judging on flavor and texture. We were betting on the traditional Campbell's version as an easy winner, but alas ... find out which brands are the tops in the slideshow below.

As always, this taste test was in no way influenced or sponsored by the brands included.

  • #1: Pacific Creamy Tomato

<b>Comments:</b> "Really creamy, but needs more acidity. It's so good though, that I would buy this and just add some lemon or hot sauce." "Yum! Creamy!" "Creamy and lovely. Tastes like classic Campbell's made with milk." "Creamy and pleasant." "Sweet, with a nice creaminess. More of a bisque."

  • #2: Campbell's Sun-Ripened Yellow Tomato

<b>Comments:</B> "The yellow color is off-putting, but the flavor is lovely and light." "The yellow color throws me off. Tomato soup should be red. Tastes more like juice than soup." "I like this more than I thought I would! Nicely balanced." "Less sweet than the others."

  • #3: Amy's Chunky Tomato Bisque

<b>Comments:</b> "Yum! Sweet, with a 'real tomato' flavor. Love the chunks." "Super sweet but gets major points for tasting like SpaghettiO's." "A little tomato saucy, but not horrible. My heart wants cream or cheese." "Best texture of the bunch."

  • #4: Campbell's Tomato

<b>Comments:</b> "Tastes like the sauce for SpaghettiO's." "The sweetest of the bunch." "A little too acidic. Like regular Campbell's made with water. Too salty." [Editor's note: This is Campbell's made with water.] "Tastes like tomato paste." "This one actually tastes like tomatoes." "Classic, balanced flavor. Bright."

  • #5: Campbell's Gourmet Bisques: Tomato Roasted-Garlic Bacon

<b>Comments:</b> "This is pizza sauce with bacon in it. This would be good if I were a sugar-obsessed glutton." "Meaty, which I don't entirely hate." "OH MY. So much garlic! That is not soup." "Sweet and garlicky?" "Very creamy, cheesy and salty."

  • #6: Progresso Vegetable Classics: Hearty Tomato

<b>Comments:</b> "Bland but not horrible." "Disgusting!" "WAY too sweet. Like dessert tomato sauce." "Good, but too much tomato skin." "Extremely sweet. If you put it in an ice cream maker, you could easily pass it off as strawberry sorbet."

  • #7: Muir Glen Tomato Basil

<b>Comments:</b> "Horrible fake dried basil flavor." "This would be so good on a pizza! But it's not tomato soup." "Oddly sour, not in a nice way. Too thin and watery." "A little smoky and a little watery." "Tastes more like pasta sauce." "Nice herbal flavors, but the tomato flavor is muddy."

  • #8: Campbell's Gourmet Bisques: Thai Tomato Coconut

<b>Comments:</b> "AWFUL. NO!" "This soup is trying way too hard." "WOW. That has coconut milk and lemongrass in it!" "How bizarre! Tastes like chicken tikka masala sauce or something."

  • #9: Progresso Vegetable Classics: Tomato Basil

<b>Comments:</b> "Gooey. Slimy." "Tastes like celery. Too much celery." "Oh no. This tastes like cardboard." "Gross dough flavor."

  • #10: Campbell's 100% Natural Harvest Tomato With Basil

<b>Comments:</b> "Watery and awful." "Is this soup expired? Gross." "Oh no. More cardboard soup. Awful flavor, no tomato to be found." "Pasty." "Boring."

Discovery in synthetic biology takes us a step closer to new ...

Scientists report that they have developed a method that cuts down the time it takes to make new 'parts' for microscopic biological factories from two days to only six hours.

The scientists, from Imperial College London, say their research brings them another step closer to a new kind of industrial revolution, where parts for these biological factories could be mass-produced. These factories have a wealth of applications including better drug delivery treatments for patients, enhancements in the way that minerals are mined from deep underground and advances in the production of biofuels.

Professor Paul Freemont, Co- Director of the Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation at Imperial College London and principle co-investigator of the study, which is published today in the journal Nucleic Acids Research, says:

"Before the industrial revolution most items were made by hand, which meant that they were slower to manufacture, more expensive to produce and limited in number. We are at a similar juncture in synthetic biology, having to test and build each part from scratch, which is a long and slow process. We demonstrate in our study a new method that could help to rapidly scale up the production and testing of biological parts."

Parts made up of DNA are re-engineered by scientists and put into cells to make biological factories. However, a major bottleneck in synthetic biology is the lack of parts from which to build new types of factories. To build parts using the current time-consuming method, scientists have to re-engineer DNA in a cell and observe how it works. If it functions according to their specifications, then the scientists store the part specifications in a catalogue.

Now, scientists from Imperial College London have devised a much quicker method that does away with the need for them to re-engineer a cell every time they want to make a new part. The team say their work could lead to vast new libraries of off-the-shelf components that could be used to build more sophisticated biological factories.

James Chappell, co-author of the study from the Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation at Imperial College London, says:

"One of the major goals in synthetic biology is to find a way to industrialise our processes so that we can mass produce these biological factories much in the same way that industries such as car manufacturers mass produce vehicles in a factory line. This could unlock the potential of this field of science and enable us to develop much more sophisticated devices that could be used to improve many facets of society. Excitingly, our research takes us one step closer to this reality, providing a rapid way of developing new parts."

When a cell is re-engineered, the re-programmed DNA in the cell encodes a message that is conveyed by molecules called messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) to the cell's production factories called ribosomes. The ribosomes translate the genetic information into a command that instructs the cell to perform functions. For example, scientists can already re-engineer a cell into an infection detector factory, which produces a protein that detects chemical signals from human pathogenic bacteria and changes colour to indicate their presence.

In the study, the Imperial researchers demonstrate for the first time that the same method can be achieved in a test tube outside of a cell. This involves extracting from cells the machinery that produces mRNA and proteins and providing the energy and building blocks to help them survive in test tubes. The team then add their re-programmed DNA to the solution and observe how it functions.

The advantage of this method is that scientists can develop litres of this cell-like environment so that multiple re-programmed DNA can be tested simultaneously, which speeds up the production process of parts.

The next stage of the research is to expand the types of parts and devices that can be developed using this method. They also are aiming to develop a method using robots to speed up and make the whole process automated. Professor Richard Kitney, co- Director of the Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation at Imperial College London says: "Synthetic biology is seen by the British Government as having the potential to create new industries and jobs for the benefit of the UK economy. This work is part of a wider, major research programme within the Centre to develop technology that can be used across a range of industrial applications."

Filmmakers track Polynesian football dreams | The Salt Lake Tribune

(Paul Fraughton | The Salt Lake Tribune) Tony Vainuku who is making a documentary film, "In Football We Trust", following the lives of four Polynesian high school football players who are pursuing college and professional careers, has picked up backing for the film from a major broadcaster. Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Sports ? Independent documentary focuses on Pacific Islander prep players in Utah.

Filmmaker Tony Vainuku grew up on football dreams.

The 34-year-old Salt Lake City native began playing at age 6 and took to the field for Highland High School in the mid-1990s. His aspirations for athletic glory got derailed for family reasons, but the Westminster College marketing major has devoted the past five years to documenting experiences of young Polynesians in Utah pursuing football careers.

His independent film, "In Football We Trust,?? tracks the lives of four Utah high school players of Pacific Island descent, two at Hunter High and one each at Bingham and Highland.

The movie, slated for release as early as 2014, takes a deep look at unique aspects of Polynesian culture, family pressures, poverty and gang violence affecting the athletes? lives, Vainuku said. It also includes interviews with professional players with Utah roots, Baltimore Ravens defensive end Haloti Ngata and retired NFL star Vai Sikahema, the first Tongan ever to play in the league.

"I want to show more of the reality and of how hard it is to be successful in the NFL,?? said Vainuku, who is also of Tongan descent. He said his cousin and childhood football idol, Joe Katoa, inspired the film. A one-time 5A first-team all-state linebacker at Highland High, Katoa?s life later veered into crime and prison.

Film co-director and producer Erika Cohn described ``In Football We Trust?? as an immigrant story focused on youths who are taught almost from infancy that they are going to be NFL players.

"Their lives totally revolve around football from the moment they wake up until the moment they go to bed,?? Cohn said. "But throughout their journey, there are injuries, competitive pressures and physical demands that are just incredible. At many points, it becomes too much.??

Cohn said the film is now in post production, thanks to financial backing from a major broadcaster as well as Chevron, Zions Bank, the Utah Humanities Council and Pacific Islanders in Communication, a consortium of financiers.

Republican Brown will not seek return to Senate

BOSTON (Reuters) - Former Republican Senator Scott Brown said on Friday he will not run in a June election to fill the Massachusetts U.S. Senate seat vacated by John Kerry, a move likely to dim Republican chances of picking up the traditionally Democratic-held seat.

Brown, who stunned the liberal establishment of Massachusetts with a win in another special election in 2010, lost his re-election bid last year.

"I was not at all certain that a third Senate campaign in less than four years, and the prospect of returning to a Congress even more partisan than the one I left, was really the best way for me to continue in public service at this time," Brown said in a statement.

"I will not be a candidate for the United States Senate in the upcoming special election."

Brown had been under pressure from local party officials either to launch a formal campaign or to step aside to clear the way for an April 30 primary ahead of the June 25 special election.

Two Democratic Representatives, Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch, have already launched their campaigns to replace Kerry, a Democrat, has left the Senate to become U.S. secretary of state.

REPUBLICAN FIELD UNCLEAR

Observers said it was unclear which Republican would step in now that Brown has decided not to run. The best-known possible candidates include William Weld, a former governor of Massachusetts who served from 1991 through 1997, or Kerry Healey, who served as the state's deputy governor under Mitt Romney.

"The Democrats' chances are excellent at this point, provided Markey is the nominee," said Jeffrey Berry, a professor of political science at Tufts University.

If Lynch were to win the primary, however, "then the race becomes more interesting because it is conceivable that liberal Democrats could sit it out."

Recent polls of likely voters showed Brown with a modest lead over Markey and a strong lead over Lynch in a theoretical election matchup.

"He has basically been campaigning non-stop for three years," Lynch said in a statement referring to Brown. "It's perfectly understandable that he wouldn't want to undertake another campaign. I wish all the best to Scott and his family."

Despite losing Brown, Republicans nevertheless expressed confidence.

"It's time to move forward," said Rob Collins, executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. "The Massachusetts special election provides a real pick-up opportunity for Republicans."

Democrats currently hold 53 U.S. Senate seats to 45 for the Republicans. There are two independent senators.

In 2010 Brown won a special election to fill the seat held by the late Edward Kennedy, becoming Massachusetts's first Republican senator in three decades. He lost his re-election bid to Democrat Elizabeth Warren, a former Harvard professor.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, a Democrat, on January 30 named his former chief of staff, William Cowan, to hold Kerry's U.S. Senate seat until a successor is picked.

Cowan told reporters he viewed the appointment as temporary and had no plans to run in the special election.

Staying out of the Senate race leaves Brown the option of running for governor of Massachusetts in 2014.

Brown did not comment on that possibility in his statement, but said of the Senate: "I know it's not the only way for me to advance the ideals and causes that matter most to me."

As Sony teases next PlayStation, leaks reveal new controller, recording capability

Featured

Video

2012 was a great year for video games, but one game stood out from all of the rest. NBCNews.com's Todd Kenreck reports. Play video

While recent months have been awash in leaks and anonymous reports suggesting that Sony and Microsoft are gearing up to launch brand-new competing video game machines, it appears Sony will be the first to take the wraps off its next-generation console.

Sony on Thursday released a mysterious video that seems to be teasing the reveal date for its new PlayStation machine, which sources say is code-named Orbis.

The trailer above is suitably vague ? ultimately showing off little more than the iconic PlayStation symbols and announcing a Feb. 20 event in New York (which online viewers will be able to tune into here). But the Wall Street Journal reports that its sources confirm that, indeed, Sony will be revealing its next machine and that it will be available in North America in time for the holidays. Meanwhile, well-known game analyst Michael Pachter tweeted the following: "Sony is inviting investors and media to the Feb 20 event; that means console announcement."

If the reveal takes place as expected then, Sony will fire the first shot in the next big gaming battle between Sony and Microsoft. Microsoft is expected to reveal its own next-generation game machine ? code-named Durango ? in the coming months as well.

Meanwhile, Sony's trailer has been followed by some fresh information leaks about Orbis' design and capabilities. Edge reports that its sources say the new Sony machine will come with a redesigned controller that features a small touchpad in the center. That touchpad is based on the one found on the back side of Sony's handheld Vita game machine.

Edge also reports that the next PlayStation will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen gaming for users to edit and broadcast, and the controller will have a new "Share" button so players can share screenshots and video clips online.

Meanwhile, Edge's "development sources" confirm earlier reports that the next PlayStation will be more powerful than the next Xbox. And much of their information jibes with a recent report from gaming site Kotaku, which was given more than 90 pdf documents detailing the console.

And with powerful new consoles on the horizon that means next-gen games are in the works as well and speculation has abounded about which games will be playable on the machines.

CD Projekt Red development studio (the company responsible for the Witcher games and the forthcoming "Cyberpunk 2077" game) on Friday revealed its brand new REDengine 3 gaming engine.

CD Projekt Red said in a press released that the powerful new engine is "a next-gen ready solution" that will bring players "closer to the most life-like world ever created in video games." And the timing of the announcement ? mere hours after Sony's teaser reveal ? seems to suggest that "Cyberpunk 2077," which is being made with the REDengine 3, will be a game specially made for the forthcoming consoles.

Meanwhile, many game pundits have speculated that Bungie's forthcoming title ? the yet-to-be-fully-revealed project code-named "Destiny" ? will be a next-gen game. And many expect both Ubisoft's "Watch Dogs" game and the forthcoming "Star Wars 1313" game to appear on the new consoles as well.

Check out InGame editor Todd Kenreck's chat (below) with the folks behind "Star Wars 1313" and "Watch Dogs" ... and watch them delicately step around the nex-gen questions.

Valentine&#39;s Day Gifts For Boomers -- Five Clever ... - Huffington Post

Romance is a lovely thing, but truth is, love can be expressed in many forms. And for many midlifers, a dozen roses is just so yesterday. So we did a little out-of-the-box thinking and came up with this list of five Valentine's Day gifts for midlifers with their needs specifically in mind. Trust us, they'll love you for it.

For midlifers who lose their phones.
Why yes, it happens to the best of us. While Millenials may be able to to jam their iPhone into the pocket of their skinny jeans, midlifers are still tossing it into the great cavernous gorge known as their oversized tote bag. Ha! Fat chance of fishing it out before it stops ringing. So along comes a great solution: Wear it around your neck on one of these nifty lanyards; remember when you used to make them at day camp when you were a kid? The silicone lanyards that securely hold your iPhone come in a rainbow of colors and retail for $15; the fancier bling ones sell for about $24. The website can tell you who carries them near you although if you fill out the online contact form and tell them you heard about it here, owner Cheryl Bloxberg says she'll sell to you directly. Case Kraze also sells Stylus Pluggies for $12.00 for those of us with fat thumbs.

Fortune cookies are the original tweets, so who needs Twitter?
This falls under the building a better mousetrap heading. Super Accurate Fortune Cookies bills itself as the smartest cookies on Earth. Started by Ray Richmond, whose job title is cookie scholar, these Chinese fortune cookies provide some choice words about life in Los Angeles, New York and Las Vegas. They've just introduced a Valentine Day line with such zingers as "This strikes you as not quite as thoughtful as flowers." Great packaging -- a Chinese food takeout box -- 10 cookies for under $10.

Something that beats a foot rub.
OK, nothing actually beats a foot rub in our book, but we are pretty interested in the Walking Tall Soft Step? Foot Corrector, which promises foot, knee, hip and ankle pain will be gone in one minute -- all accomplished by sticking a piece of plastic in your shoes. The orthotics operate on the premise that with proper foot support comes perfect posture, balance and body alignment. The company owners love to talk about arches, fallen and otherwise, but we're just sticking with the basics: They don't make your feet sweat, don't get stinky, and fit into 95 percent of the footwear on the market. Check them out. Price: $350.

The Cadillac of massage chairs.
We like to road-test massage chairs. We mostly like to road-test them when we are walking around malls and convention centers and need to take a load off our feet for a few minutes and there aren't any normal chairs available. But that's how we came to meet Taku Ino, president of TK World, and manufacturer of the Cadillac of massage chairs. This thing had more bells and whistles and massaged us in parts we had forgotten we had. Price tag, not an inexpensive $9,500, but this is a chair you can have a relationship with.

Time is passing.
We need watches with faces large enough for us to actually see the time flying by. We are partial to the collection at Hour Power because they not only have big watch faces, but they also sentimentalized the watch by adding a spot for a photo and a little love message to be recorded. Gets a big "awwwwwww" in our book. Many models are water-resistent, but the occasions when we forget to remove them before stepping in the shower. Price: Ranges, but around $100.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver apologized Thursday for anti-gay comments he made to a comedian during Super Bowl media day, saying "that's not what I feel in my heart."

"I'm sorry if I offended anyone. They were very ugly comments," Culliver said during an hour-long media session. "Hopefully I learn and grow from this experience and this situation."

He said he would welcome a gay teammate to the 49ers, a reversal of his remarks to Artie Lange two days earlier during an interview at the Superdome.

"I treat everyone equal," Culliver said. "That's not how I feel."

He added that he realized his comments were especially offensive to many people in San Francisco and the Bay Area, which is home to a large gay community.

"I love San Francisco," Culliver said.

During the interview with Lange, Culliver responded to questions by saying he wouldn't welcome a gay player in the locker room. He also said the 49ers didn't have any gay players, and if they did those players should leave.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh met privately with Culliver to discuss the remarks.

"I reject what he said," Harbaugh said. "That's not something that reflects the way the organization feels, the way the rest of the players feel."

The coach would not discuss if Culliver would face discipline from the team, such as a fine or loss of playing time.

"He pledged to grow from it," Harbaugh said.

The interview began with Lange asking Culliver about his sexual plans with women during Super Bowl week. Lange followed up with a question about whether Culliver would consider pursuing a gay man.

"I don't do the gay guys, man. I don't do that," Culliver said during the one-minute taped interview. "Ain't got no gay people on the team. They gotta get up outta here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff."

Lange asked Culliver to reiterate his thoughts, to which the player said, "It's true." He added he wouldn't welcome a gay teammate ? no matter how talented.

"Nah. Can't be ... in the locker room, nah," he said. "You've gotta come out 10 years later after that."

The 24-year-old Culliver, a third-round draft pick in 2011 out of South Carolina, made 47 tackles with two interceptions and a forced fumble this season while starting six games for the NFC champion Niners (13-4-1).

He had his first career postseason interception in San Francisco's 28-24 win at Atlanta for the NFC title, which sent the 49ers to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1995. They will face the AFC champion Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

The 49ers participate in the NFL's "It Gets Better" anti-bullying campaign. Three organizations working for LGBT inclusion in sports ? Athlete Ally, You Can Play, and GLAAD ? reacted to Culliver's remarks and later acknowledged his apology.

"Chris Culliver's comments were disrespectful, discriminatory and dangerous, particularly for the young people who look up to him," said Athlete Ally Executive Director Hudson Taylor. "His words underscore the importance of the athlete ally movement and the key role that professional athletes play in shaping an athletic climate that affirms and includes gay and lesbian players."

Calling Lange's questions "real disrespectful," Culliver said he realized he was speaking to a comedian and not a journalist.

"That was pretty much in a joking manner," the player said. "It's nothing about how I feel."

Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, who made headlines this season with his vocal support of a gay-marriage initiative in Maryland, said Culliver's comments to Lange were reflective of how many players in the NFL feel, even if they don't express it publicly. He hopes the 49ers cornerback will learn from this experience and become a positive role model in the quest for equality.

"You can't fight hate with hate," Ayanbadejo said. "You've got to fight hate with love."

Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard said Culliver should be allowed to express his views, even if some people found them offensive.

"The guy's entitled to his own opinion," said Pollard, who has acknowledged that he disagrees with Ayanbadejo's stand on gay marriage. "I'm not going to sit here and knock him. I'm not going to sit here and judge him. It's freedom of speech. If you don't like it, don't listen to it."
